SRE
In June 2019, the DfE published “Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education” (June 2019). This guidance makes it compulsory for all schools to have an RSE Policy and to consult parents and carers in the development of that policy.
They also made changes to the right of parents or carers to withdraw their child from certain elements of sex education that are not taught as part of the compulsory national science curriculum.
The new requirements formalise expectations but don’t make significant changes to what we already teach our students. Many of the topics required by the DfE were already taught as part of our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum, and in other subjects.
The Sex and Relationships Education that we offer, forms part of the Health and Science curriculum and is integral to our children’s development. Our children learn about this within a moral, family orientated framework, which prepares them to understand changes and nurture positive relationships as they grow. With support from professionals, some of the content we deliver involves topics such as puberty. Parents/carers are informed of this and are given the opportunity to discuss the resources and content of these lessons. In Year 6, parents have the right to withdraw their child from specific lessons following a discussion with the principal. Forms can be requested from the office.
