Early Years Curriculum

Our approach to learning

Our aim is to provide a holistic learning safe, happy and stimulating environment through which all children are challenged with the aim of outstanding progress achieved by all.

OFSTED reported “The atmosphere in Early Years is happy, calm and purposeful”.

Our planned learning in Nursery is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with the children’s interests taken into account also. We ensure children are taught to be independent and confident learners, equipped with the foundations to nurture a lifelong love of learning. We consistently engage with and value contributions from parents, professionals and the local community to ensure best outcomes for our children and families, inline with the ethos and values that we hold here at Oasis Academy Harpur Mount.

We create a calm and supportive atmosphere which promotes self-esteem and independence. We treat every child as an individual and support their development in all areas of the Early Years, with a high focus on social skills and communication. We help every child to grow up feeling confident about their own identity and ability, and promote friendship, understanding fairness and the rights of others, valuing diversity, and ready to be a British citizen.

Areas of our Nursery Curriculum include the following:

These areas are taught through a variety of half termly topics, special events and celebrations that arise throughout the year.

All children take part in 3 groups time a day, Literacy, Mathematics and Phonics. They will also do a number of focus activities during the week where they will practise their skills and deepen their knowledge and understanding. The children are supported to have fun and engage in our learning environment both inside and out to increase their skills and vocabulary.

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage outlines four guiding principles that should shape Early Years practice. These are:

  • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured
  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
  • Children develop and learn at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

There are also seven key features of effective practice (Appendix 1) that underpin the Early Years ethos and are woven through the Oasis EYFS Curriculum.  These are:

  • The best for every child
  • High quality care
  • The curriculum: What we want children to learn
  • Pedagogy: helping children to learn
  • Assessment: checking what children have learnt
  • Self-regulation and executive function
  • Partnership with parents

We want our parents and carers to feel in the loop when it comes to their child's education, therefore we ensure a breakdown of what is taught within our classrooms and the topics we are learning about is available on our newsletters online and sent to every parent/carer through Showbie.
